Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty is a procedure that is done to reduce and reshape the size of breasts. Breast reduction can also include making the areola smaller. This procedure is often done to relieve discomfort that is associated with excessively large breasts. When the plastic surgeon performs this surgery, excess glandular tissue, breast fat and skin is removed by making one or more incisions in the breast. Once the excess skin and tissue are removed, the surgeon stitches the skin to close it. Some breast reduction surgeries may require the areola and nipple to be removed and repositioned.
